Traveler’s Diarrhea

You may still find it a little weird to watch and keep track of your dog’s feces.

Your veterinarian will first perform a thorough examination of your dog. Talk to your vet about your dog’s recent and long-term medical history. Include information about current medications and diet. Remember to share information regarding anything you think your dog might have eaten, such as plants, chemicals, or dangerous foods.

Cooked, plain white rice may help to soothe your dog’s upset stomach! Just cook regularly and allow it to cool off before feeding to your dog. Plain white rice can be mixed in with your dog’s food or given alone.

However, in recent years, the same rules may not always apply. Depending on the breed and color of your dog, the time of day may not be the only factor in preventing heat exhaustion and heatstroke, which are very scary and life-threatening medical emergencies. Playing fetch for 30 minutes in the backyard with a brachycephalic dog (a flat-faced dog such as a French Bulldog or a Pug who has trouble breathing, even in a cool climate) can lead to a trip to emergency veterinarians, but so could an instance where a thick-coated dark-colored dog was just let outside in the backyard for a few minutes to use the bathroom. The signs of heat exhaustion can sometimes be difficult to catch, especially if your dog seems to be acting normally while having fun outside and drinking plenty of water. Early signs, such as excessive panting and drooling and bloodshot eyes, may go overlooked at first since your dog is exercising. However, once dogs become overheated to the point where they are vomiting, panting excessively causing difficulty breathing, passing out, tremoring or having a seizure, it’s already considered heatstroke.

I stupedly changed my dogs food from pedagree to wainwights dry and gave him a few pouches of wet food. From last sunday he has had diarrhoea. Monday and tues was the worst with 3 bouts of sickness but because he is still his usual self, eating and drinking fine with no signs of dehydration vets only want him in if he still has it by the weekend. I have followed all their advice by starving him for 24 hours which was hell and he is now on a bland diet of boiled egg with boiled chicken which is the only thing we can get him to eat and even then we have to actually hand feed him and he wont eat much because he hates it. We have been really strict and havent given in to his wimpering for his kibble but now he has lost a little weight. Now his poo is solid and brown in a morning but yellowy and runny on an afternoon. Is this normal for an upset tummy from a diet change or is this more serious or am I over panicking things? If not then what should I expect?

    Does your pet have diarrhea?

  • Helps maintain proper gut flora
  • That, my friend, is the right question. The short answer is that your dog can get diarrhea either because of a problem in the gastrointestinal tract itself, or a systemic condition that leads to diarrhea as a secondary effect. Clearly, if the problem does not originate in the belly, trying to fix the belly won’t solve it.
